The pygmy three-toed sloth is teetering on the brink of extinction - with just about 79 individuals remaining on the small Isla Escudo de Veraguas, located off mainland Panama. Unfortunately, if they cannot flourish there, they cannot anywhere else. Their sole habitat is this island consisting of red mangroves.
This recently discovered sloth species is smaller than its mainland relatives and can be distinguished by a dark band across its forehead. Its lifestyle which primarily involves residing in trees, occasionally dipping into water for a swim, leaves it generally safe from natural predators.
However, humans pose a significant threat. Illegal hunting and mangrove destruction have already diminished the population by over 80%. There is an urgent need for enhanced education and rigorous law enforcement to prevent the permanent loss of these remarkable miniature sloths.
Please sign this petition to call on the Panamanian government to collaborate with local communities on Escudo De Veraguas in our fight to save the pygmy three-toed sloth.
